Diamond purity : inventory of natural inclusions

Purity, also called clarity of diamond, is with its color a criterion difficult to appreciate for non gemologists.

This is a comparative classification criterion for diamonds based on the number and size of inclusions (various impurities) present at the heart of the crystal and surface defects of the gemstone. This is one of the 4 criteria for assessing white diamonds quality.

The purity index is evaluated by a gemologist with a magnifying glass x10, analyzing diamond under a cold light (typically LED) held by tweezers on a white background.

It owes its color to the presence of Bore at the heart of its structure, therefore requiring particular geophysical conditions for its formation. This explains why only three mines in the world produce most of the production of natural blue diamonds:

  • Argyle Mine in Australia
  • Culligan Mine in South Africa
  • Golonconda Mine in India

Yellow diamond

Although yellow diamond is less used in jewelry than pink diamonds (fr) or blue diamonds (fr), they are however much more present in nature than the latter.

Yellow diamond is indeed the most common of all colored diamonds. It owes its hue to the presence of nitrogen atoms in its crystalline structure.
