African V-shaped ring making in gold
During these last years, African art and design has been a source of inspiration for the fashion industry as well as the jewelry industry. Driven by the appeal of ethnic art, new creations are emerging from patterns and colors of the black continent.
In the case of this ring making, this V shape ring design is not a novelty as African V-shaped ring is already well known, it is a classic of African jewelry art used as an engagement ring or a wedding ring.
In this documentary publication we will show you how is handcrafted this gold ring design in our jewelry workshop from laminated 18k gold sheets to the finished ring.

The design of the deep V shape ring
This African wedding ring is a simple design with an incredible rendering. It is composed of two welded V gold shapes connected by their ends.
CAD modeling allows us to better understand the design of this ring seen from several angles. This simple design makes it harder to get the good ring size than a normal band ring, but with some experience everyrthing works fine.
View from 3 different angles of the ring
The computer tool also allows us to obtain a virtual rendering of the gold ring before manufacturing. This ensure the width of the gold band is adapted to the design we are looking to make.
This kind of visual rendering makes it possible to avoid any misunderstanding between the sponsor of the jewel and the jeweler before starting the manufacture of the jewel.
V ring making
Our work begins with the rolling of an 18-karat yellow gold lingot into a gold plate of the desired thickness.
Our lingot of 18-karats gold after passing through the rolling-mill
This plate is then put to the correct dimensions for the ring size being longer and larger than the final ring size of our client.
In the case of this particular ring, the size of the finger is 50 (French size which is equivalent to a US size of US5 1/4), the plate of which should measure 50 millimeters in length + twice the thickness of the laminated gold plate in order to take them into account when shaping the ring.
The geometry of our ring is then traced with a scribe on the gold plate, cut to the correct lenght and width, as you can see below.
Unrolled flat, our V sahpe ring takes the form of triangles juxtaposed one close to the other
Using a jeweler hand saw, the V shape ring is cut out off the plate. A jeweler hand saw has a very thin blade giving a perfect adjustment of the different parts once cut.
Our ring is then shaped around a ring mandrel, wrapped around the mandrel it takes its final circular form. Because of the measurements made previously, both extremities adjust perfectly one to the other.
A single point of welding allows to close the ring. Minor size adjustements allow to get the exact ring size required for this ring.
Here, you can see the particular ring shape we got just before polishing it.
